The shelter pets needed snuffle matts, so ACE students stepped up to help.
10 students along with Katja Piergostini and Melissa Lasky volunteered at the Connecticut Humane Society in Wilton, CT on Wednesday, February 18th.
The Connecticut Humane Society is a place where animals go when they are injured or have a sickness. Our English teacher, Melissa explained that she “loves helping out at the shelter because I am a huge animal lover, and am grateful they have such a nice shelter to take care of them until they find their forever homes.”
The CT Humane Society has resources for anyone who has fallen upon hard times and needs help with food or medical care for their pets, and they are most well known as a place where animals can get adopted and brought to if people cannot take care of them anymore.
Snuffle matts are made out of rubber and threaded with large pieces of felt. They provide enrichment for dogs who need a little entertainment while in the shelter. The “snuffle” through the felt pieces to find treats and play.
When student volunteers finished creating the snuffle matts, they toured the animal shelter, and one animal who stood out is a cat named Big Papa. He has been there for the longest and still hasn’t found a home. We want to find Big Papa a loving home that will take care of his wants and needs. Big Papa needs to be in a dog free environment. He has not had very much experience with children so he prefers to not be around children but is willing to give it a try.
The student volunteers had a fun time by being able to create the toys for the dogs, and the shelter is always looking for more volunteers. The Connecticut Humane Society teaches people how adoption works and what animals are currently available for adoption. Our community needs to help out these animals and find them a forever home.
