ACE Students Explore Nature, Find Inspiration, and Connect on the Bee Brook Hike

Teachers at ACE provide students with opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom through experiences such as the Bee Brook Loop hike in Washington, Connecticut.

The 2.1 mile trail takes students through a scenic natural area near the Shepaug River and includes a special stop where students can write poems, journal entries, or other creative pieces inspired by their surroundings. The hike encourages students and staff to connect with nature while also offering a chance to relax and reflect. I decided to participate because I wanted to see what the hike was about. Even though it was a very hot day, I enjoyed the experience. The hike allowed me to connect with both nature and my peers, and I found it to be a therapeutic and rewarding activity.

According to a teacher at ACE. Students who have participated in the hike often have positive experiences and may encourage others to join future trips. “I would hope that students who have participated in the past have enjoyed the trip enough to encourage their peers to join us on future trips,” Daniela explains. She believes that the hike provides an enjoyable experience that many students would want to share with their classmates.

One concern some students may have is whether the hike is difficult for people who are not very active. However, Daniela explained that the trail is designed to be accessible to most students. “This hike is low-intensity, pretty flat except for a few mild inclines, and the trail is mostly in the shade.”

She adds that “the hike is a great opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones, take a healthy risk, and spend time outdoors in a supportive environment.”

Daniela emphasized the benefits the trip offers to all ACE students, “Any student at ACE would benefit from participating in this trip.”

Beyond the physical activity, the hike gives students a chance to experience nature in a way they may not encounter in their everyday lives. It also allows them to slow down, be present, and engage in creative activities such as writing and reflection. Through these experiences, students can listen, feel, create, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Overall, the Bee Brook Loop hike is more than just a walk through the woods. It is an opportunity for ACE students to explore nature, express themselves creatively, and build connections with their peers. Whether students are experienced hikers or simply looking to try something new, the trip offers a meaningful experience that can leave participants feeling refreshed, inspired, and connected to the world around them.
