April 1st is the one of the days where people get to prank each other. Some pranks that are common are prank calls or fake news and more. But have you ever wondered where this tradition came from? The funny thing is that no one knows 100 percent how it started but historians have a few guesses.
The most popular story starts in France back in the 1500s. Back then the New year was actually celebrated on April 1st. But then, the King and the pope decided to change the calendar so that the new year would start on January 1st.Because there was no internet or news, the news traveled very slowly. Some people didn’t hear about the change for a long time, and others didn’t want to change their traditions. People would make fun of the people who still celebrated April 1st. They called them “April fools” and played tricks on them, like sticking things on their backs.
Another story is that April fools is just a way to celebrate spring. A long time ago, the Romans had a festival called Hilaria, where people dressed up in costumes and mocked their friends. Some people also think the “fooling” part comes from weather, because spring weather can be unpredictable and “trick” you into thinking it’s warm when it’s actually cold.By the 1700s April fools day became really popular in England And Scotland. In Scotland, they had a tradition called “hunting the gowk”, where they sent people on fake errands. Today pranks are even more popular. Big companies like Google or Mcdonalds often post fake ads on April 1st to see if they can trick everyone.
We interviewed Gabi and hayden, and we asked them, if they participate in april fools and and if they do what do they do, this is what they said, they said that they still enjoy april fools and and they like to take out the filling of the oreos and put toothpaste on the oreo. Another prank they do is they add the mac and cheese powder and stir it to look like orange juice. We asked them if April Fools was important to them and they said that it wasn’t necessarily just something fun to participate in.
To wrap things up, April fools day has a long and interesting history that probably started over 400 years ago. While we might not know the true story of how it began, it’s still a fun day of the year. It is a reminder that even in a serious world, it’s important to take a break once in a while.
