Basketball

Basketball is a dynamic team sport where 2 teams are desired to control a ball, utilizing techniques such as dribbling and passing to score points by shooting the ball through an elevated hoop.

Originating in the late 19th century in the United States, basketball has evolved into one of the world’s most popular sports, with organized play at various levels, including professional, college, and high school. The NBA is recognized as the main professional league for basketball. A few main legends who have played in the NBA are Lebron James, Michael Jordan, and Shaquille O’Neil.

The NBA steadily established itself as one of North America’s major sports leagues through the 1950s and 1960s, drawing on the rising popularity of collegiate basketball as well. In 1950, the league notably included Black players for the first time.  Still, the United States remained the epicenter of the basketball world. In 1967 the American Basketball Association was founded as competition to the NBA’s professional dominance, adopting more offense-oriented rules and play, including the three-point shot.

Currently teams are competing in the Conference Finals. The Oklahoma City Thunders are competing against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, and the NY Knicks play against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference. The winners will compete in the NBA Finals starting on June 3rd.

Whether you are playing or watching the game, it continues to be one of America’s favorite sports.
