Genesis Andujar Santana, Staff Writer

After working five long years at our school taking care of all students, our nurse Carey Shew has left us. The importance of helping a student when hurt is very important. Carey did what she could to fulfill this role. We show our appreciation by celebrating her new job and thanking her for all her work.

On November 9th, 2022 at ACE, I interviewed Carey about her perspective on how she helped the students with any injuries and the great opportunity she received to leave this job. When interviewing Carey I asked her, “Did you enjoy being a nurse at ACE?” Carey replied, “I did. I got to know all the students and staff. It’s nice to have relationships with the staff.” This shows that not only the job was enjoyable but the staff and students made the job more superior. Another question I asked Carey when interviewing her was, “what was the worst case of an injury you had?” Carey replied, “Three years ago somebody put their hand through the glass on the door. It was stuck.” Carey has experienced unexpected situations like this, that she had to take care of.

An interesting question that was asked while interviewing Carey was, “Has there ever been a crisis you had in the last five years?” Carey replied with, “Yes, a couple of students were very ill. I wasn’t sure why but I called the ambulance. Especially with mentally ill students that have issues, it’s stressful on everybody.”

As a nurse, Carey had to take on the burden of dealing with all sorts of health problems. She did everything in her power to help. The following question I asked Carey was , “Was part time helpful in your daily life?” Carey responded with, “It was, because I have a daughter who is fifteen now and it was very helpful when she was younger.” This shows how beneficial the job was to her personal life.

This interview happened after the celebration that we had for her in the cafeteria. Therefore I asked her, “How did you feel about the surprise appreciation?” Carey answered with, “I felt very humbled and surprised.” This shows that we accomplished our mission of surprising her, even though John spoiled the surprise.

After five years of working at ACE Carey has enjoyed all of it and had a bunch of experiences along the way. When interviewing her I asked her, “What tips do you have for the next nurse?” Her advice was, “Every school nurse has to be flexible, knowledgeable, and patient.” With this information the next nurse has some beneficial tips.

ACE says thanks to Carey for a last time. May we see her again very soon!
