Are Cosmetics We Use Safe?

Is makeup really makeup?

Full glam beat used with now known dangerous ingredients.

Did you know that cosmetics contain ingredients that are harmful for human usage? People use cosmetics everyday without realizing what they are putting on their bodies. Most of these ingredients confuse hormonal balance, cause allergic reactions, developmental delays and even cancer. Ingredients such as Talc, Lead, BHA, BHT or Coal tar dyes are just a few ingredients to look out for on your cosmetic labels.

Sarah from ACE says “I’ve been wearing makeup for over six years now, and I have not once wondered or looked into the ingredients of my products.”

Sarah is not the first to say she has never noticed the ingredients in her cosmetics before. Harmful ingredients are purposely hidden from the attention of those buying it.

With that being said, cosmetic companies are very dishonest. Parabens, which are the chemicals used to help preserve makeup, have one of the biggest side effects today. According to the top cosmetic companies ranked in the whole world, Nars. MAC cosmetics, Clinique and L’oreal are a few of the several brands that use harmful parabens. Parabens can enter the body through the skin and mimic estrogen. This can then lead to breast cancer cells growing and are strong enough to disrupt the normal function of hormone systems affecting male and female reproductive systems.

You can find these ingredients in cosmetics such as makeup, perfume, skin care, moisturizers , hair and hygiene products. Talc which is one of the ingredients, caught the attention of multiple people on Tik Tok. This information made the brand Coty change their formula of their famous airspun powder. This makeup powder has been used since 1935 up until 2023 when they decided that talc was very dangerous and unhealthy to be used on the body. When the makeup powder is inhaled, it can  clog lungs known as clown lungs. The Airspun powder made by Francois Coty in 1935, maintained the same ingredients till the beginning of this year. Social media on Tik Tok helped us find out that this was harmful and soon enough everyone who used makeup powders was checking their ingredients.

Student T from ACE says “ I’ll scroll through social media and find videos talking about cosmetics, usually on Tik Tok”. T like many others, uses Tik Tok to inform them on products such as makeup or skin care. The ingredients that make up the formula for makeup products are usually fragrances, thickeners, colors, animal derivatives and water.  Several makeup brands in the US combine toxic chemicals in their products because they are cost efficient and because they can increase the efficacy of the product.

Cosmetics are very unsafe and are made up of toxic ingredients. Before purchasing anything, cosmetics need to be  researched more deeply before being used  on the body.
