For the past few months at ACE, the students here in Daniela’s Children’s Literature class have been working super hard and even having meetings to prepare for their upcoming trip to Pembroke Elementary School to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, also known as Read Across America. On the trip, the ACE students read to Pembroke students their favorite books and play with the kids.
In preparation for the trip, many ACE students during school hours had practiced reading out loud and Daniela had kept everyone very well informed on how the plans for the day would go. She even planned a meeting to gather other students who weren’t a part of her class to join the trip if they wanted (which many of them did!). In total, we had about 20 ACE students go on the trip.
The trip to Pembroke consisted of ACE students leaving during first period, and getting in the van to head to Pembroke, where we then were served breakfast and assigned to our classes. Groups of two students got a different room and sometimes grade level. In the end, after reading and playing with the kids for about an hour, it took all of us a bit to leave since the children adored every ACE student and all clung to us as we headed back to school. In the end, on the drive home, many ACE students said they would love to go to Pembroke for Read Across America again next year since everyone involved had so much fun.
This trip was fun because it helped ACE students learn how to build better relationships. A little while after the trip a couple of students found kids from their Pembroke class out in public where the kids were overjoyed to see their ACE readers again.
