HAT Program: First Month Recapped
A follow-up with ACE students who are currently participating in the opportunity.
March 3, 2023
As the Henry Abbott Technical school’s after-school trade program approaches its second month, I sat down with some of the attendees to gather their thoughts. The program began on January 31st, 2023 and is an ongoing opportunity for Danbury students to earn a certification in any of the trades offered at the program.
“It’s really great,” says student Brianna Vilanni, who chose to learn Precision Machining at the program. “It takes a lot of patience.” Though she stated she chose the topic due to it being the only available one left over, she found interest in learning about the subject and “sees this in her future.”
Ezekiel Joyner, another ACE student attending, is also enjoying his time at the program. “It’s good. I’m enjoying it,” he said. Ezekiel, who is also studying Precision Machining, said, “I could see myself doing this in the future.”
At the program, attendees are learning a mix of new skills related to their chosen subjects. “I learned how to make a hammer,” Ezekiel explained. “Next, I hope to learn how to make a keychain.”
“I learned how to program and work the machines,” stated Brianna. “Our teacher, Mr. Steven Bova, is a great teacher.”
ACE principal John
Webber reports that students “enjoy going and having the class because it’s hands-on.” He explained the importance of the program, claiming, “It’s an important program because students may have tried to go to [Abbott Tech] and didn’t get in, and this is their way of staying involved with the school and its opportunities.”
“A lot of students may not have wanted to go in 8th grade, but in 11th and 12th grade they may know what they want to do with their future, and this is their way,” John stated.
The after-school program will last until April, and we’re thrilled to check back in with the attendees next month to check on their progress.
