What’s the Point? by Anthony Hellmann

What’s the point? That’s what I would like to know!

I have been given the opportunity to write this article and am not really sure what to write. Do I write about the
importance of Mathematics? Do I give my opinions on the structure of the Alternative Center or of a traditional high school? Or, maybe, I should do a compare and contrast? But, what’s the point? What do you want to know that I could write about? I’m sure that I’m clueless on this one.

But, I need to write something. I mean, I said I would. And, I feel honored to do so. But now that I’m sitting here, trying to make the most of the opportunity, I can’t decide on what I want to write, what I want to share, what words of wisdom I should offer. So, let me ask you . . .

What’s the point? Do you know?

How old were you five years ago? What was your life like? Were you happier? Were things simpler? How old will you be in five years? What will that look like? What will you look like? Do you feel that you need to have it all figured out by then? What’s the point?

And, where are you now? Are you happy? Are you who you want to be? Or, is it all so very confusing? And, if you’re not where you want to be in life, why is it so difficult to get there? I mean, what’s the point? Do you know?

Well, if you looked to this article for some answers, I apologize. I can tell you that I’m 36 years old. Most days, I think that I am happy, relatively speaking. I think that I am the person I want to be, but I still ask the same questions. Maybe that’s the point! Maybe you just need to keep asking and to keep looking for the
answers. Who knows? I mean really . . .

What’s the point? Do you know?
