DHS Word Fest

Every year before Spring Break, DHS has a two-day Word Fest to celebrate Poetry Month. On Thursday, April 10 Melissa’s Journalism class attended one of the sessions, and on Friday, April 11th, Daniela’s English 1 class took a trip to the  DHS Word Fest event. Students got to see their peers show off original poetry writing and performance skills. Audience members were also given an opportunity to join the performance by simply scanning a QR code.

DHS English Teacher, Emma Stankiewicz, organized this year’s festival. The two-day festival took place in the DHS auditorium, and teachers were able to sign up to bring their classes to sessions offered each period.

The performances were lively and entertaining, and the poetry ranged from topics of freedom to love. Cierra Medina, an ACE student who attended, says her favorite part was when DHS student “Khalil came out and started rapping,” because his performance showed he had passion for what he was doing.

Jordy Rivera, another ACE student who attended both days, said his favorite part was being in DHS and getting to see his old friends, as well as Khalil’s performance.

Word Fest is a great way to celebrate National Poetry Month, kick off spring break, and create a bit of unity between DHS and ACE students.
